JTB and Air Jamaica Sponsoring Faith-Based Travel Event

With its high number of churches, it's no surprise that Jamaica is a favorite destination for faith-based travelers. To help promote the island to that group of potential travelers, the Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB) and Air Jamaica are sponsoring this year’s New York Call, an annual faith-based event created by a coalition of pastors and churches throughout the tri-state area. The event takes place in Long Island, NY from August 30 - September 1.

“Destination Jamaica has a large number of churches and faith-based institutions that will appeal to visitors interested in these types of attractions,” said Basil Smith, Jamaica’s Director of Tourism. “Based on this high level of interest, the Jamaica Tourist Board has been an active member of Religious Conference Management Association (RCMA) for more than 20 years. “This association has helped us share what we have to offer to the faith-based traveler and we look forward to participating in New York Call where we will reach out to those who are interested in booking faith-based travel trips."

Jamaica will be pointing out some of its faith-based travel options, such as the annual Fun in the Son Gospel Festival.

Air Jamaica offers special air packages for groups of 10 people or more from the airline’s 10 U.S. gateways perfect for a wedding, reunion or church convention, including the “Price-match” program, that matches the price of any competitive group’s air contract, (Subject to availability) as well as:

* Guaranteed group rates and discount agreements
* Special site inspection rates for qualified groups

Update on Power, Water Service in Jamaica

Good news continues to come in from Jamaica in the wake of Hurricane Dean. The Jamaica Public Service Company (JPSCo) has now restored electrical power to about 78% of its customers. Work is now complete in the parishes of Westmoreland (Negril), St. James (Montego Bay), Hanover (Lucea) and Trelawny (Falmouth). They're making progress in the south, too; the hardest hit parish of St. Elizabeth now has power to 46% of its customers. Right now, they're predicting the entire island's power will be fully restored by September 9, 2007.

Things are moving along in terms of repair to the water service, also; right now they're back up to 85% capacity.

Reader Question: Is Climbing Dunn's River Falls Dangerous?

Dear JamaicaTripper,

I'm visiting Jamaica in December on a cruise with my husband, my 10 and 13 year old sons, and my mother, who is in her 60s. Everyone really wants to climb Dunn's River Falls but I wonder if it's safe? We are not climbers. Thanks, Diana M., Charleston

Dear Diana,

Thanks for your email. Dunn's River Falls is really a spectacular sight and definitely one of the top attractions on the island. It is a genuine waterfall, though, so slips do occur. Some things to keep in mind:

• be sure to go with one of the fall's guides. There are freelance guides who try to take travelers up the falls but the guides who work for the falls know the terrain and will tell you exactly where to step.
• bring your own water shoes. There are shoes for rent but we always bring our own; we know they fit correctly and will be comfortable, helping to prevent slips.
• take it slow. It's not a race; groups can go up the falls very slowly.
• feel free to stop. If you'd like to just climb part of the falls, that's fine, too; you can get out at many places along the way. The falls start at the beach level and very gradually make their way up; this first leg of the hike is the easiest. If you get out, you can walk the remainder of the way right beside the falls (great for photos) on a paved sidewalk.

Happy travels!

Chukka Caribbean Extends Jamaica Sale

Here's a good deal: Chukka Caribbean Adventures is ending its two-for-one sale for tours in Jamaica. As you probably know, Chukka has a huge assortment of tours including horseback riding, kayaking, zipline tours, jeep tours, and many more.

You'll have to make your tour booking through www.chukkacaribbean.com by September 30, 2007. All tours must be taken between September 1, 2007 and October 31, 2007. The free tour needs to be of equal or lesser value than the tour your purchase and must be offered at the same location. This offer applies only to tours in Jamaica that are booked online and it does not include Polo Collection Tours (these are very exclusive--and neat--tours like ziplining at night).

We took Chukka's Zion Bus Line Tour in June and absolutely loved it, visiting Bob Marley's house at Nine Mile. The tour was very well run and a good bargain (the tour cost which included hotel pickup, lunch, a snack, drinks, admission to the Bob Marley Centre and transportation is priced at about half of what you'll pay a taxi driver to take you from Ocho Rios to the house.)

A Thousand Roofs of Love Project Underway After Hurricane Dean

Yesterday we told you about a hurricane relief effort underway on the South Coast organized by BREDS; today we have news of another relief effort from the American Friends of Jamaica (AFJ), a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting Jamaican charitable and social initiatives. In partnership with Missionaires of the Poor, led by Father Richard Ho Lung, the group is organizing a A Thousand Roofs of Love project. The roof project initiated by Ambassadors Sue and Chuck Cobb has gained the support of United States Ambassador to Jamaica, Brenda Johnson and husband J. Howard Johnson along with AFJ President Ambassador Glen and Gloria Holden, each personally pledging $20,000 USD to support roof rebuilding and repairing of 1,000 homes.

Many children and families in southern parishes remain in shelters since they have lost homes and personal belongings due to the significant flooding and storm surges dumped by the Category 4 hurricane. "The American Friends of Jamaica sends our sympathy to our friends, brothers and sisters in Jamaica," commented Ambassador Glen Holden, AFJ President. "We are responding by providing materials to many individuals who had damage to their roof. Our goal is to reach 1,000 homes and we have raised almost 40% of that goal at this time."

Since the Hurricane hit, the Missionaries of the Poor have been engaged in providing immediately needed packages of food as well as setting up soup kitchens for many without food.

Ambassador Sue Cobb notes, "A Thousand Roofs of Love Project will bring tremendous comfort to these suffering communities. This is a massive task and the Missionaries of the Poor deserve all the help we can give them in their remarkable and selfless service for the welfare of those less fortunate than themselves."

An assessment revealed there is tremendous need for roofing material to repair the damage. The goal is to provide materials for 1,000 homes at $250 USD per home, ($200 for materials and $50 for food).

Each dwelling will be provided with four pieces of zinc and four pieces of plywood. With an additional pledge from the Plymouth Congregational Church in Coconut Grove, Florida and others, the fund currently totals over US $80,000. The support of individuals and organizations willing and able to participate in this 1000 Roofs Project will help achieve the set target of $250,000 USD.

All contributions are tax-deductible.

Road & Power Update

We've had several emails from readers asking about the conditions of the roads across Jamaica. Good news: the road from Negril to Montego Bay to Ocho Rios is clear and accessible to general traffic.

Elsewhere on the island, the Mount Rosser, Flat Bridge, the South Coast roads are cleared.

Treasure Beach roads are now cleared, but caution is needed due to downed poles.

Regarding electrical power, about 34% of the electrical customers now have power once again. By Sunday, August 26, the following areas should have power: Kingston and St. Andrew, St. Catherine, St. James, Westmoreland, Hanover, Trelawny and St. Ann.

Customers in the parishes of St. Thomas, Portland, and St. Mary should have power by the end of next week.

Unfortunately, though, it could be weeks before the parishes of Clarendon, Manchester, and St. Elizabeth have their power supply restored.

Update from BREDS

Yesterday we told you about a hurricane relief fund that's been set up by Breds - The Treasure Beach Foundation and is being operated by Jakes's. The fund will assist with providing aid for the many people of Treasure Beach. Unfortunately, though, we gave you the wrong URL for BREDS and wanted to make sure we corrected it. The correct URL is www.breds.org.

We received this update from Jason Henzell, Island Outpost President and Jake's Owner, about the project: "The directors of Breds - The Treasure Beach Foundation, a registered non-profit (since 1998) did a preliminary assessment in the area from Great Bay to Fort Charles, including Lewis Town and Sandy Bank. This preliminary assessment took into account type of damage (category 1-4 as used by UN) and ability to pay. Our directors know this community extremely well and I can assure you that we know of those in need and without a support system. Our goal is to raise US$10,000 and has this matched to help approx 50 persons. If we exceed this amount, our intention would be to include the district of Beacon where persons also received extensive damage. Not included in this figure is loss of fishing traps which we extimate could be as high as 1,000 rolls of mesh which translates into approximately 4,000 traps. As we know, this is essential to the sustainability of Treasure Beach, being a Fishing Village."

Power Update After Dean

We're still getting good news from Jamaica in terms of hotels and roads but it looks like there might be more damage to the electrical system than first thought in the southern and eastern parishes.

While restoration efforts is proceeding as expected in other parishes, the process is much slower in these parishes:

• St. Catherine (just west of Kingston, home of Spanish Town)
• Clarendon (on the island's south side, home of May Pen)
• Manchester (on the south coast, home of Mandeville)
• St Elizabeth (on the South Coast, home of Treasure Beach and Black River)
• St Thomas (the southeasterly most parish, home of Morant Bay)
• Portland (the northeasterly most parish, home of Port Antonio)

Word is that the assessment has indicated that the damage to the company’s transmission system in these areas is far greater than that caused by Hurricane Ivan in 2004.

Giving Back to Jamaica After Hurricane Dean

If you're wondering how to help the people of Jamaica in the wake of Hurricane Dean, we've just received word about a hurricane relief fund established by Jake's and run by BREDS, The Treasure Beach Foundation.

According to Island Outpost President and Jake's Owner, Jason Henzell, “These forces of nature tend to bring out the best in people - my staff and community are incredible. Spirits are high, and our faith is stronger now than ever. The Jamaican spirit is strong, and with that, we know we will prevail all obstacles. Faith is the strongest asset of any nation, and for Jamaicans, it is the gold standard.”

Jake's resort has established a hurricane relief fund through Breds - The Treasure Beach Foundation (USA), which Henzell runs for the less fortunate who have property damage, no insurance, no support system, especially to the sick and elderly. The initiative is also in concert with Treasurebeach.net, a community web site.

BREDS, TREASURE BEACH FOUNDATION is a non-profit organization established in 1998 to promote education, sports, cultural heritage, environmental awareness and more recently emergency healthcare in Treasure Beach. The long-term vision for Breds is to establish Treasure Beach as a model for low-density, environmentally friendly, sustainable community in Jamaica. The term “Breds” short for Brethren -- has for generations, been a familiar way of hailing a person from this local fishing community.

The Tryall Club to Reopen This Weekend After Hurricane Dean

If you were like us, you were glued to the Weather Channel on Sunday; they were broadcasting from The Tryall Club. We've received good news about the condition of the resort after this storm:

August 20, 2007, Montego Bay, Jamaica, WI - The Tryall Club, Jamaica's pedigree golf and luxury villa resort located 12 miles west of Montego Bay, was spared any significant damage following Hurricane Dean, which passed over the island yesterday afternoon and evening. The majority of the after effects are related to landscaping restoration and debris clean-up. Early reports indicate that much of the surrounding area near The Tryall Club also sustained much less damage than originally anticipated.

"We were well prepared for the worst and experienced only a fraction of what we were braced for," said Doug Brooks, CEO of The Tryall Club. "We are grateful to our loyal staff who went out of their way to ensure the safety and comfort of all those who remained. We expect to welcome guests back to Tryall again this coming weekend."

All of the approximately 150 guests were safely evacuated by Saturday afternoon, with the exception of a handful of guests who voluntarily opted to ride out the storm. A core team of 40 staff and the few remaining guests took shelter in the underground, concrete basement of the Great House. The historic 19th Century Georgian plantation house sits perched on a hill overlooking the northern side of the island and Montego Bay. Apart from some of roof tiles that will need to be replaced, the solid structure was undamaged. This is not surprising, since the Great House has weathered many extreme weather situations over the past nearly 175 years.

The safe, bunker-like structure of the Great House, including its unobstructed vantage point of 300 feet above sea level, also proved to be the perfect location for Meteorologist Mike Seidel and crew from the Weather Channel, who reported live updates from The Tryall Club throughout the weekend.

The Tryall Club is known for its portfolio of 69 luxury private villas ranging from classic bungalow-style to expansive showpiece homes. Each villa comes with its own full staff, including a personal chef, housekeeper, laundress and gardener, as well as a private swimming pool and sweeping views of Montego Bay and the scenic northern coastline.

Set among 2,200 lush acres that were formerly the vast sugar cane fieldsof one of the most prominent plantations in the West Indies, The Tryall Club is a designated National Heritage Foundation site. Golf at The Tryall Club is a world-class experience. The 18-hole, par 72 course was designed by Ralph Plummer, where the Johnny Walker World Championship was played in 1990's. The course wends its way around the estate through the lush hills and palm groves down to a mile and half stretch of scenic coastlines. Golfers at Tryall are privy to some of the most spectacular fairway views in the world, rivaling PebbleBeach and St. Andrews, with dramatic sweeping vistas of the island's northern coast from Montego Bay to the Western edge of the coastline. With nine clay and Nova Cushion tennis courts, Tryall also offers the largest selection of tennis activities in Jamaica, some of which are lit for cooler night games. A pro-shop, an onsite tennis professional and an experienced team of instructors and hitting partners, weekly tournaments and private lessons for all ages are available. Additionally, a new state-of the-art exercise facility was added last month. Tryall looks forward to re-opening for business later this week and to providing its guests with the Caribbean's premier luxury villa experience for guests.

Guests and travel agents requiring further information on existing or future reservations should contact The Tryall Club directly at 1-876-956-5660.

Sunset Resorts Reports No Structural Damage

We've just received more good news from Sunset Resorts with locations in Ocho Rios, Montego Bay and Negril:

Montego Bay, JAMAICA (August 20, 2007) - On August 19, 2007, Hurricane Dean skirted the south coast of Jamaica. Sunset Resorts, operators of Sunset Beach Resort & Spa in Montego Bay, Sunset Jamaica Grande Resort & Spa in Ocho Rios and Sunset at the Palms in Negril and Sunset, have made assessments of all three of the company's North Coast properties:

Disruptions to the island's electrical supply have necessitated the use of the hotels‚ stand-by generators. It is expected that the island's electrical service will be restored on a phased basis occurring as early as this afternoon.

Due to the disruption of airline flight operating schedules, it is strongly recommended that all arriving guests should contact their airline to re-confirm their flights.

Sunset Resorts maintains a detailed Hurricane Preparedness Plan, which went into effect as soon as the threat of the storm was announced. Staff and management at all three properties had taken all precautions to keep guests safe, comfortable, and well informed. As such, all went smoothly.

"The security and comfort of our guests and our staff was our priority. Our management team and staff have taken all precautionary and prudent measures to ensure their safety," said Sunset Resorts Managing Director Ian Kerr. "We are extremely grateful that we didn't suffer any structural damage from Dean and that our guests and staff weathered the storm safely. Guests are in good spirits and certainly respect our classic Jamaican hospitality during this time and we look forward to receiving guests with future reservations."

Half Moon Reports No Structural Damage

We've just received some good news: Montego Bay's Half Moon is reporting no structural damage. The reports we're getting in from Montego Bay are good and we understand that Sangster International Airport is already accepting emergency flights and will reopen to commercial flights later today. It sounds like damage is more extensive on the South Coast and Kingston; we'll keep you updated as we receive news. In the meantime, the good news:

No Structural Damage to Famed Luxury Resort

Rose Hall, Jamaica (August 20, 2007) Managing Director of Half Moon Montego Bay, Richard Whitfield, reported that the 400-acre resort experienced only minimal effects following Hurricane Dean that passed over Jamaica on Sunday night.

A survey crew has assessed the property and has reported only some fallen trees, limbs and debris. There has been no physical damage to any structure or injury to any person.

The 400-acre resort was well prepared for the onslaught of Hurricane Dean. Guests and employees were sheltered at Half Moon’s 6,000 square foot conference center to wait out the storm. Chefs, maintenance, housekeeping, security and management team were on hand to ensure guests felt comfortable and secure as the storm passed.

Half Moon’s emergency management crew has begun removing debris left by the storm. The resort is still operational, and will be moving guests back into their rooms by this afternoon.

“While we were all anxious about the effects of Hurricane Dean, we were well prepared with our emergency management procedures and were in full gear to secure both lives and property,” Mr. Whitfield said.

Half Moon is a luxury resort situated on crescent-shaped white sand beaches, with 398 rooms including suites, cottages and villas. In addition to luxurious accommodations, Half Moon also features a recently renovated Robert Trent Jones Sr.-designed 18-hole golf course, renowned David Leadbetter Golf Academy, 13 lit tennis courts, equestrian center, fitness center, superb cuisine, 51 swimming pools, recently constructed Anancy Children’s Village, water sports, Dolphin Lagoon, 24-hour medical center and more. In October, the resort will open the doors to the new $4 million dollar Fern Tree Spa, which will feature beachfront spa suites, water sculptures, hydrotherapy swimming pools, yoga pavilions, and therapeutic/healing spa treatments.

Jamaica Chef Wins Throwdown with Bobby Flay

Last week we told you about the throwdown between Jamaican chef Nigel Spence, owner of Ripe Kitchen and Bar in Mount Vernon, New York and former Food Network intern, and celebrity chef Bobbly Flay. Spence won the event and was proclaimed “King of Jerk” besting Bobby Flay, Food Network celebrity chef and personality during his popular show “Throwdown with Bobby Flay” that premiered on Sunday, August 12.

Flay surprised Spence with a challenge to determine who could create the best Jerk Rib Eye Steak by arriving at Spence’s restaurant unannounced, to the delight of fans who had already gathered around. As the two friends and colleagues joked around, Spence talked about his Jamaican roots and the impromptu competition began at Ripe.

When the smoke cleared and the food was plated, the two chefs proudly displayed their own versions of Jerk Rib Eye Steak dishes, to the two judges, Monroe College’s Daniel Hinder and Allan Vernon of Vernon’s Catering. After a couple of intense moments, both judges agreed that the Kingston, Jamaica native Spence had won.

The Mayor of the City of Mount Vernon, New York, The Hon. Ernest Davis expressed his pride for one of the city’s best chefs, “Ripe is one of the best restaurants in the entire county. The city is very proud of Nigel's success as it is a testament to what hard work and talent can achieve. This is only just the beginning of exciting things for Nigel Spence and I am thrilled that Mt. Vernon boasts such a unique establishment, one that melds top class cuisine with great music and warm people.”

Spence said, “I am of course proud that the Food Network acknowledged the work that we have been doing at Ripe since we first opened in 2003, as well as the importance and popularity of Jamaican cuisine. Next to eating in Jamaica, it was great to be able to host Bobby Flay here. As he did not win, he's always welcome to come back for a rematch or dinner....his choice!”

“I am honored to have gone up against Bobby in this challenge as he does represent the best in the world. The culinary ‘throw down’ with him was truly is one of the highlights of my career,” added Spence.

If you missed the broadcast, check it out on August 23 at 8:30 PM ET/PT; August 24 at 3:30 AM ET/PT; and August 26 at 4:00 PM ET/PT. And try cooking jerk at home; Spence's Big Rib Eye Jerk Steak recipe has been very popular!

Jamaica's Nigel Spence on Throwdown with Bobby Flay

Who's the king of jerk? On August 12, you'll find out on the Food Network when Food Network celebrity chef Bobby Flay goes “grill to grill” with Jamaica’s Nigel Spence, owner of Ripe Kitchen and Bar in Mount Vernon, New York. The two face off on Throwdown with Bobby Flay airing Sunday, August 12 at 10 p.m. on The Food Network.

The show positions Flay against a master chef known for a special type of cuisine. In this episode, Executive Chef and Owner Nigel Spence stepped up to meet the challenge. As the title of King of Jerk was up for grabs, the two Chefs battled it out over Spence’s Big Jerk Rib-Eye Steak recipe. Spence is a Culinary Institute of America graduate and former Food Network intern.

According to Bon Appetit Magazine, 81% of Americans grill outdoors and according to Spence jerk cuisine is a way for Americans to put some variety into their normal grilling habits. Authentic Jamaican pre-made marinades, spices, produce and sauces are readily available in the grocery stores. These marinades and spices are made by Jamaican companies such as Walkerswood, Busha Browne and Grace Kennedy and allows cooks to explore their creative side.

Chef Nigel Spence explains the growing popularity of jerk cuisine: “The American palate has grown more sophisticated and has developed a huge appetite for zest and spice. With its extensive ingredients list and complex flavors, “Jerk” cooking has satisfied this craving and has rightfully earned a place on the culinary map. It’s particularly satisfying to me to see Jamaican food that I grew up with finding popularity here - especially being noticed by Bobby Flay.” Spence recommends that Jerk cuisine can be nicely paired with a lager-style beer such as Jamaica’s Red Stripe or a slightly sweet rose or full-bodied Reisling as the sweetness counteracts the spicy flavor of jerk.

History of Jerk

The technique of “jerking” is thought to have originated with the Maroons, slaves who were freed by their Spanish masters just before the British captured the island. These ex-slaves escaped to the island’s most remote mountain areas. Meat is first marinated for hours in an incendiary mixture of peppers, pimento seeds, scallion, thyme and nutmeg, then cooked over an outdoor pit lined with pimento wood. (The Maroons did the cooking underground to camouflage the smoke.) The low heat allows the meat to cook slowly, retaining the natural juices while becoming infused with the flavor of the wood. Jerk stands can be found all over the island, especially at Boston Beach just outside Port Antonio.

About Nigel Spence, Executive Chef Ripe Kitchen and Bar

Chef Spence, a Culinary Institute of America alumnus hails from Kingston, Jamaica. Ripe is Mr. Spence’s first entrepreneurial endeavor outside of a road side “jerk shack” that helped put him through school.

As part of CIA’s intense training program, Nigel interned at the Television Food Network. Upon graduation, Nigel was asked to stay on at the network. TVFN afforded Nigel the opportunity to work with culinary luminaries such as Emeril Lagasse, Mario Batali and Bobby Flay.

Reader Question: Rose Hall Resorts

We've received the following question from a Maryland reader:

READER: We are coming to Rose Hall in November and wanted an objective point of view about where to stay and why. We have narrowed our choices down to Half Moon, The Ritz or the new Iberostar. We have had great luck with other Iberostars and from what we can see online and through our travel agent, this Iberostar appears to be quite special. This is for our 30th anniversary vacation. Sports is not something to factor in. Though I play golf I won't be playing on this trip.

So here's the main question: How far along is the Iberostar with construction and will the next phases be disturbing if we stay there with construction and disruption? Is it ready enough to dive in now?

Of the remaining two, The Ritz and Half Moon, which would you recommend? The Half Moon seems so spread out and a bit weathered and we have heard that the Ritz beach is not that great but the rooms and luxury is unsurpassed. But that's hearsay from here.

Just so you know what we were quoted from Baltimore, Maryland USA, per person including roundtrip on Air Jamaica, transfers and all meals and taxes:

Iberostar: $1014 PP
Ritz: $1298 PP
Half Moon: $1629 PP

So you can see there is quite a range. Round Hill seemed nice but was $2000 PP and out of our budget. Any gems we're missing? We prefer resort style not high rise, nice pools, spas and nice restaurants. We selected Rose Hall because it had a quaint, historic feel and would provide things to do beyond the beach and resort.

We are looking forward to out visit on or about November 4th through the 9th for five nights for our 30th anniversary. So obviously, we want this to be a memorable trip without what ifs and should haves.

We would appreciate any advice from your perspective. We found your name on the Rose Hall website, a site we found very valuable in use choosing where to stay in the Caribbean.

With your help, we hope to make this a memory of a lifetime.

OUR RESPONSE: Thanks for your email; we'd be happy to give you our opinion of some resorts in the Rose Hall area. We just returned from Jamaica at the end of June and saw a lot of the development in the area. Here are our opinions:

• There is a lot of construction underway at Iberostar with two more properties going up next to the one that's presently open. They've got a ways to go on those two hotels. We've enjoyed several of the Iberostar properties on the Riviera Maya but for such a special occasion we'd save this resort until it is completed.

• Those prices are very good but make sure they include meals; usually the Ritz and Half Moon are sold as EP packages (room only) although they do offer meal packages. Food is expensive at both properties.

• We don't know if you've seen the Rose Hall Resort (it used to be Wyndham Rose Hall); it is undergoing a huge renovation right now so we'd pass on that one for now. It is a high rise.

• Half Moon is very spread out; the property is enormous (on the other hand, it never feels crowded, even when fully booked). Some of the rooms are more weathered that others; some room blocks are newly renovated so there is some difference in quality. The beach at Half Moon is great and huge with developed and undeveloped sections. Half Moon is opening a huge spa in October which will be one of the largest on the island.

• Service is great at the Ritz Carlton; if you've stayed at other Ritz Carltons you will find it very much the same. The Ritz Carlton is more of a traditional hotel than Half Moon in terms of hallways, elevators, etc.

• Between the Ritz and Half Moon, we'd say Half Moon does have a more traditional Jamaican atmosphere.

• If you are looking for a nice all-inclusive in the area, we'd recommend both Sandals Royal Caribbean which is in the same area, and Grand Lido Braco, which is further east. Of the two, the grounds of Sandals Royal Caribbean is lusher and it is closer to the airport if you're trying to maximize your vacation and minimize the drive.

Happy travels! Paris & John

July Strong for Air Jamaica

We've just received word that Air Jamaica is reporting an increased passenger load in July over the corresponding period last year, with strong bookings for August.

In July alone, the airline flew over 200,000 passengers, a 9% increase over July 2006.

“The summer so far has been incredible which is due in large measure to our loyal customers and frequent flyers who always continue to support the airline. We wish to thank them for their support and assure them we are working to continuously enhance the airline’s unparalleled Lovebird Hospitality. Our staff must also be commended for delivering quality service to ensure the airline remains top of mind for leisure as well as business travelers,” said Paul Pennicook, Air Jamaica’s Senior Vice President, Sales & Marketing.

It's no surprise to us; we've noticed every flight--on every airline-- we've been on to Jamaica this year running just about full.

Jamaica Dogsled Team Lead Musher to Train in Yukon

Jamaica Dogsled Team to Train With Three Time Yukon Quest Champion as Part of 2007/2008 Winter Race Schedule
Danny Melville owner and founder of the Jamaica Dogsled Team has announced that his lead musher will train with former Yukon Quest champion Hans Gatt in the hopes of qualifying for the 2009 Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race -- billed as the toughest sled dog race in the world.

"Two of our mushers will train in Jamaica and Minnesota and our head musher Devon Anderson will train here with Hans. With races scheduled throughout the season in the US, Canada and the training and qualifying races to take place here in the North, we are thrilled to have the expertise of a champion like Hans to help us build a team and the skills of our mushers," says owner Danny Melville. "This is not just a promotional move, we take mushing seriously and it has become part of our tourism offering in Jamaica."

Hans Gatt outlined the plan to train Devon and prepare him and his team to run both a 200- and 300-mile qualifier in order to be allowed to enter in the Yukon Quest in 2009. "I am looking forward to working with Devon and have visited the Jamaica Dogsled Team in Ocho Rios. Now I need to help them prepare not only for a race of this distance but also the wilderness and elements that have to be faced when running the Yukon Quest," stated Gatt. "Dog care, equipment and preparation are key."

Last year Anderson visited the Yukon and followed the Yukon Quest through the Yukon portion. He also had the opportunity to mush on legendary Lake Laberge. Anderson is operations manager for both of Melville's tourism ventures and both have had a chance to meet and tour a number of the Yukon's wilderness tourism operators businesses. "I look forward to getting up there and beginning my training with Hans and the team," said Anderson from Ocho Rios. "Many people ask me how I found the cold -- and I have to say it was a little shocking but the beauty of the region is amazing and to train with a three time champion of the Yukon Quest is a chance in a lifetime!"

About the Jamaica Dogsled Team: Sponsored by singer and songwriter Jimmy Buffett and Margaritaville, the Jamaica Dogsled Team is the newest addition to the Chukka Caribbean Adventures family. Formed out of a crew of mixed breed dogs found on the street or through the Jamaican Society for Prevention of Cruelty of Animals (JSPCA), team membership means a new and better life of care and meaning for the team dogs. Anderson, along with the Jamaican sled dogs, is featured in Palm Pictures' documentary feature "Sun Dogs" and their training continues for the unique "Jamaica Dogsled Team Experience" and "Dogsled Encounter" offered at Chukka Cove Farm, Ocho Rios. A portion of proceeds from all tours goes to the JSPCA.
