Usain Bolt Enjoys Visit to Mystic Mountain

While his fleet feet gave the illusion of flight as he raced to gold medal victory during the 2008 Beijing Olympics, world record-shattering sprinter Usain Bolt recently had the chance to really fly through the air with the greatest of ease as he soared through a forest on a Zipline Tranopy at Mystic Mountain.

The latest tourist attraction in Ocho Rios, Mystic Mountain also welcomed fellow 2008 Olympians Asafa Powell, Michael Frater, Nesta Carter and Melanie Walker, who had the opportunity to experience a sport that brought prominence to the island of Jamaica in the 1988 Winter Olympics-- bobsledding. This warm weather version offers a 10-minute ride at 28 mph through an area of the 100-acre site.

Like the sightseers who have visited Mystic Mountain since its summer 2008 opening, the athletes also had the chance to enjoy the beauty of the tropical paradise on the Rainforest Sky Explorer, an open-air charlift which takes tourists on a half hour ride through the verdant landscape.

Couples Resorts Offers Wedding Customization

We're received word that Couples Resorts has launched the new “Weddings by Couples” with an emphasis on customization, personalization and choices. In addition to the free wedding service currently available to guests, the revamped wedding program allows couples to choose their wedding date online at any of the four resorts, register for their honeymoon, register for Romance Rewards and even spread the word on the resort’s unique message board.

We've done a vow renewal at Couples Ocho Rios (our reception, above) and can say they do an excellent job with everything from the wedding venue to the reception. Ours was simple and just like the free wedding package offered to guests with a small wedding cake and sparkling wine; the minister did an excellent job as did the on-site wedding coordinator who helped set everything up for us.

Couples Resorts allows a lot of customization, whether it is a private ceremony on the beach or a lavish, inspired affair for friends and family. Many of the options available for customizing weddings are complimentary, such as the personal service of a wedding coordinator, bridal bouquet, boutonniere for the groom, sparkling wine, two-tier cake and his and hers half-hour massages.

“Each wedding is as distinctive as the couple and the ability to create their dream day to reality is Couples Resorts dedication,” stated Randy Russell, chief romance officer and senior vice president of sales & marketing. “We know how meaningful the wedding day is and we offer the perfect setting for brides and grooms to live out their dreams – free of worry and hassle.”

Here John does the dolphin pull, drawn through the water by two of many dolphins who live here.

Island Outpost Offering Fitness Options

Jamaica's resorts aren't waiting until January to start thinking about fitness resolutions, and Island Outpost, always an innovator, is promoting a healthier lifestyle with several fitness offerings.

"Instead of that spinning class, trade it for mountain biking in Jamaica. Skip the laps in the pool for a swim in the Caribbean Sea. Running on the treadmill? Forget it. Get up and get out and into the countryside...staying in shape has never felt or looked so good," says Andria Mitsakos, president and CEO of AMPR. "Island Outpost's collection of hotels in Jamaica helps release the stress and elevates the spirit with adrenaline-packed programs to stay fit and motivated throughout the year!"

Island Outpost offers two types of fitness retreat getaways - the adventure and the holistic (meditative or spa). Whichever fits the mood or personality, guests who are active on an Island Outpost vacation recharge their body, mind and soul and even receive a sense of motivation to continue back at home, stronger, healthier and ready to take on the world! Shaping up comes easy at the following hotels:

Jake's (Treasure Beach)

The funky bohemian hideaway Jake's lures the adventurously fit minded with the off road Jamaican terrain right at its doorstep. Guests can opt to go hiking, biking and kayaking solo (and rent their own equipment) or team up with local Andy Nembhard who operates a guided service out of Jake's.

Whether it's off-roading or taking a leisurely ride through this sleepy fishing village, professional mountain bikes will help make the journey a comfortable one. Jake's is also a great place to go on a walking/hiking tour -- guests can choose from several different suggested routes listed in their in-room guides that will have them meandering along the coastline all the way to the nature reserve at the Great Pedro Bluff. Early morning kayak trips along the coasts of Frenchman's Bay, Calabash Bay and Great Bay can also be organized. And new this season guests can enjoy weekly yoga sessions at the Calabash Gazebo.

Now in its 13th year the Jake's Jamaican Off-Road Triathlon takes place every spring, featuring a 500-meter ocean swim, a 13.7-mile mountain bike course and a 4.3-mile cross-country run and can be done as a team or individually. The race is the main fundraiser for Breds Treasure Beach Foundation, a local non-profit that helps raise funds for sports, education,
environmental initiatives and health programs in the small fishing village of Treasure Beach.

Rates: Rates for Jake's start at $95 based on double occupancy now through December 14, 2007, and $115 between December 17, 2007 through April 19, 2008.

Goldeneye Planning 10th Annual Marlin Fishing Tournament

Goldeneye will stage its 10th Annual Oracabessa Marlin Fishing Tournament on Sunday, October 7, 2007 at Oracabessa Bay/James Bond Beach. Million dollar boats? Not here. What can be found is a celebration of indigenous fishing culture as local fishermen (and women!) test their skills with nothing more than their boat, a length of fishing line and the strength in their arms.

About the Event: The Oracabessa Marlin Fishing Tournament is a non-profit, community-based event, free for all participants and spectators. It is the result of an active partnership between Goldeneye, St. Mary Fisherman's Cooperative and the Oracabessa Foundation. The events goals are to create a family-oriented community day, to promote environmental awareness and sustainable fishing practices and to raise funds for the purchase of safety equipment needed by the St. Mary Fisherman's Cooperative.

The Schedule: Fishing boats set to sea at 7:00 am in hopes of hooking the biggest marlin. Landlubbers can take part in an array of activities to test their own fishing skills:

• the "Reel in the Marlin" contest replicates the haul of a 150-pound fish
• the "Precision Casting" tests casting skills
• the "Team Boat Landing" race will see teams of four competing to land a boat the fastest

Environmental education booths come courtesy of local organizations Friends of the Sea, National Environmental and Planning Agency, the Maritime Authority, Institute of Jamaica and the Natural History Department. Other activities include face painting, bounce-about, trampoline and crowd favorite the St. Mary BMX Stunt Bicycling Jam. New this year is an exhibit from the Reggae Xplosion Museum in Ocho Rios.

The Prizes: After the weigh-in station closes at 5:00 pm, prizes will be awarded to: Biggest Marlin, Biggest Nonbill Fish, Most Weight Total Catch, Most Courageous Fisherman and Best Fisherwoman. Also up-for-grabs is the "Prettiest Boat" Award open to entrants who participate in the boat painting day prior to the Tournament. Once the Awards Ceremony finishes, the "after-tournament" fun begins with vibes provided by Teflon Sound.

Reader Question: Is Climbing Dunn's River Falls Dangerous?

Dear JamaicaTripper,

I'm visiting Jamaica in December on a cruise with my husband, my 10 and 13 year old sons, and my mother, who is in her 60s. Everyone really wants to climb Dunn's River Falls but I wonder if it's safe? We are not climbers. Thanks, Diana M., Charleston

Dear Diana,

Thanks for your email. Dunn's River Falls is really a spectacular sight and definitely one of the top attractions on the island. It is a genuine waterfall, though, so slips do occur. Some things to keep in mind:

• be sure to go with one of the fall's guides. There are freelance guides who try to take travelers up the falls but the guides who work for the falls know the terrain and will tell you exactly where to step.
• bring your own water shoes. There are shoes for rent but we always bring our own; we know they fit correctly and will be comfortable, helping to prevent slips.
• take it slow. It's not a race; groups can go up the falls very slowly.
• feel free to stop. If you'd like to just climb part of the falls, that's fine, too; you can get out at many places along
