Groundbreaking Held for Montego Bay Convention Centre

Plans have been in the works for a while for a convention center in Montego Bay but now we can report that ground has been broken! On Valentine's Day, ground was broken in Rose Hall, St. James to begin construction of the Montego Bay Convention Centre, to be located east of the city. The facility will be located on 35 acres opposite the Shoppes at Rose Hall (between the Half Moon Golf Course and Rose Hall Great House).

The project is being financed through a 350 million Yuan (US$51 million) loan agreement between the Government of Jamaica and the China Import and Export Bank. “This financing of the convention centre signals the continuation of the growing economic co-operation between both countries and of China’s willingness to help Jamaica expand, grow and develop,” said Prime Minister Golding at the groundbreaking ceremony.

Plans call for the construction to be completed in 20 months. When completed, the facility will offer over 50,000 square feet of exhibition space, over 20,000 square feet for banquets, and over 11,000 square feet of meeting space.

Jamaica Tourism Grows

We've just received word from the Jamaica Tourist Board that Jamaica tourism grew in 2008. For the year, Jamaica had a total of 1,769,271 visitors, an increase of 3.9 percent in stopover arrivals. Most of those travelers--65 percent, in fact--continue to come from the US even with the economic downturn.

“The United States has historically been the largest source market for Jamaica’s tourism,” said John Lynch, Jamaica’s Director of Tourism. “Though current economic hardships pose a challenge to the travel industry, we are confident that travelers from the United States will consider Jamaica’s accessibility and value when considering a vacation destination in the coming year.”

Jamaica Works to Attract Religious Meetings

Every traveler who has enjoyed a visit to Jamaica knows that the island is dotted with churches, many say the highest concentration in the world. It's no surprise, then, that Jamaica is a popular destination with religious conference groups. Recently the Jamaica Tourist Board sponsored the “Catch the Spirit” luncheon at the 2009 RCMA World Conference & Exposition in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The event included updates on Jamaica’s increasing meeting space and hotel rooms.

RIU Donates to Jamaican Pediatric Clinic

Many of the hotels in Jamaica play an important role in community development, from education to health care. We've just received word that RIU Hotels & Resorts has donated $200,000 US ($16 million Jamaican) to the Pediatric Orthotic Services Clinic in Negril. This clinic provides care, corrective braces and therapy for children with orthopedic (skeletal) injuries, issues or deformities. The funds, which will be distributed over five years, will go toward the operational cost of the clinic including a nurse, office manager and technician who will enable the clinic to provide the best care for children impacted with skeletal issues. The gift is the largest corporate donation ever made to this clinic in Jamaica.

The Clinic will offer orthotic management and care for children with lower limb weakness, skeletal deformities, spasticity (multiple sclerosis, spina bifida, cerebral palsy), and gait deviations (standing and walking stability). Physicians from the USA will visit the clinic monthly to evaluate patients and provide care for the children. This is part of a Treat & Teach program developed by Gant Meyer, the Executive Director of the Pediatric Orthotic Services Clinic.

"Without RIU, the "Treat & Teach" project was only a dream. I could only talk about it and now it is happening. "Treat & Teach" has the visiting Pediatric Specialists share their expertise and skills with local physicians and medical staff," said Grant Meyer, an orthotic specialist who focuses on treating children with lower extremity anomalies, "The hope is to ultimately raise the bar for the treatment of children's healthcare. Without RIU's support it just would not be possible."

RIU Hotels & Resorts, which has four resorts in Jamaica, will also provide accommodations each month to visiting pediatric orthotic specialists. In Jamaica, RIU supports the Pediatric Ward at the Savanna-la -mar Hospital, a scholarship fund for tourism students at the Montego Bay Community College, and the provision of funding for several students at the Academic Resource Centre for Language in Montego Bay.

About Pediatric Orthotic Services Clinic in Negril

Founded in 2009 by Grant Meyer, Jim Wallace, and Elaine Bradley, Pediatric Orthotic Services Clinic in Negril treats children in Jamaica. Pediatric orthotic specialists from the USA visit the clinic monthly to assess patients, design the orthosis for the desired function and manage care of the patients. Pediatric orthoses are designed to provide joint alignment, correct posture, improve ROM control, and enhance standing and walking stability. The clinic is funded in part by RIU Hotels & Resorts. For more information about the clinic, contact 876-829-2699.

JamaicaTripper Editors in USAToday

Have you ever watched a romantic movie and wanted to visit the location where it was filmed? We're always interested in film locations so we jumped at the chance when USAToday asked us, as editors of JamaicaTripper's sister site, Lovetripper.com, to select "10 Great Places to Stage a Romantic Scene."

One of the first that came to mind was Jamaica's Round Hill, setting for the 1998 How Stella Got Her Groove Back. When you're ready to get your own groove back, ask for the resort's Villa 11 to create your own Angela Bassett-Taye Diggs moment.

Couples Tower Isle Sets Opening Date

Couples Ocho Rios has long been a favorite of ours so it will be interesting to see the new renovation of the property, relaunching as Couples Tower Isle on April 12, 2009. After a renovation of over $25 million, the new Couples Tower Isle property raises the bar with changes including:
  • new ocean-view suites with zero edge walk-in showers
  • a new luxury spa with rooms for couples massages,
  • renovations to areas such as the main lobby and historic piano bar
Why the name change to Tower Isle? The name dates back to the property's original name: Tower Isle Resort. In the Fifties and Sixties, the resort was a haven for Hollywood stars vacationing in Jamaica.

Sandals Negril Receives World's 1st Green Globe Platinum Certification

The world's first Green Globe Platinum Certification has been awarded to Sandals Negril Beach Resort & Spa. On February 5, 2009, Adam Stewart, CEO of Sandals Resorts International (SRI) was presented with the certification at a commemorative ceremony at the resort--the first and only resort in the world to reach this status.

The inaugural award acknowledges that Sandals Negril has reached a new level of achievement in its sustainable tourism practices, having achieved continuous certification under the Green Globe Company Standard for ten-plus years.

In 1998, Sandals Negril Beach Resort & Spa was the first all-inclusive resort to earn Green Globe Certification, following the resort company’s efforts to modify its water systems and energy requirements, adjust its waste management program and bolster an already-extensive community outreach program. Within three years of Sandals Negril’s first certification, the remaining 11 Sandals Resorts and all four Beaches Resorts had also achieved certification.

“Looking to the future, at Sandals Resorts International, we are changing the way we run our hotels to suit Mother Nature,” says CEO Stewart. “We have created a special division called EARTHGUARD made up of personnel with great expertise in operations, interior and exterior design, engineering and the environment. Any project proposed by our design team, has to go to this special committee for consideration, so that absolutely everything we are designing - from inception to delivery - is done with total environmental preservation and awareness in mind.”
