Prospect Plantation
A-1 east of Ocho Rios

If you’re interested in learning about Jamaica’s fruits, this is an excellent opportunity. This working farm takes visitors by tractor-drawn jitney or on horseback to view fields of bananas, cassava, sugarcane, coffee, allspice and more. (There are even camel tours.) You'll need to make advance reservations if you're planning a horseback or camel ride.

This guided tour is a nice look at the many plants that grow in Jamaica, an excellent introduction for travelers new to the tropics. Also, the ride travels past many trees planted by famous visitors that have ranged from Winston Churchill to Charlie Chaplin.

Along with the tour, the farm includes a butterfly aviary.

JamaicaTripper Tip: Local tour companies offer visits to Prospect Plantation; you don't need this. Hire a taxi; the ride is literally minutes from Ocho Rios. Once you arrive at Prospect Plantation, you'll take their guided tour anyway.
