What to do

The Bob Marley Centre and Mausoleum
South on B-3 from Runaway Bay 18 miles to Alexandria;
turn east in Alexandria to Nine Mile

The small community of Nine Mile was the birthplace of reggae legend Bob Marley. Today his former home is the Bob Marley Centre and Mausoleum (open daily; admission). Tucked behind a tall fence, the site is marked with green and gold flags.

Tours are led by Rastafarians who take visitors through the house and point out the single bed that Marley wrote about in “Is This Love.” The home’s walls are filled with photographs and scribbled messages left by fans.

Tours to Nine Mile: You can visit the facility on your own or on a guided tour from Chukka Cove (our recommendation). The tour is very reasonably priced (about half of what you'd pay a taxi driver to bring you here from Ocho Rios) and includes a stop for a patty, two rounds of drinks, and a jerk lunch. The tour takes place on a country style bus with an interior of Bob Marley photos and non-stop reggae as you travel through the countryside. We really enjoyed our tour (which takes most of the day) and highly recommend it.

Our Tip: Be prepared for numerous ganja vendors as you enter this facility and hassling before you enter the gates.
