Montego Bay, Jamaica Visitors Guide

Rose Hall Great House

As the home of the island's busiest international airport, Montego Bay is the first--and sometimes only stop for many travelers. For many tourists, Jamaica is synonymous with Montego Bay. This north coast community is the capital of the Jamaica’s tourism industry. Most visitors arrive by air, but this is also a popular cruise ship destination.

While Montego Bay suits many vacationers, there are definitely some who will enjoy it more than others. The following travelers might consider a stay here:

  • Visitors with a limited stay. Many resorts here are just minutes from the airport so those with three- and four-night stays would do well to choose Mo Bay over other resort areas such as Negril and Ocho Rios, almost a two-hour drive away.
  • Scuba divers. Montego Bay is considered one of the top scuba areas on the island.
  • Families. Several family friendly resorts are located in the Montego Bay area.
  • Shoppers. The city is the top shopping area on the island.
  • Golfers. Many of the top golf courses are located in the Montego Bay area.
  • First-time visitors. If it’s your first time to Jamaica, Montego Bay is an excellent choice. From here you can take day trips in several directions to sample other areas of the island or just enjoy the city’s delightful attractions.
  • Cruise passengers. If you'd like to visit Jamaica on a cruise, Montego Bay is the second busiest port after Ocho Rios.
