Insect Life of Jamaica

Jamaica has 21 species of endemic butterflies. The best known is the giant swallowtail, the largest swallowtail (and one of the largest butterflies in the Western Hemisphere). This butterfly’s wingspan averages six inches. It is primarily found in the John Crow Mountains.

Another interesting insect is the termite, which builds giant nests along tree trunks. Look for muddy structures several feet long.
