January Festivals in Jamaica

Accompong Maroon Festival, St. Elizabeth


This early-January festival celebrates the Maroon culture in the parish of St. Elizabeth in western Jamaica. Festivities, which date back to the 19th century, include feasts, blowing of the Abeng (a wind instrument), and playing of the Maroon drums. This unique festival is little attended by travelers, but is a good event if you’re looking to get off the beaten path.

Annual National Exhibition, National Gallery, Kingston

High Mountain 10k Road Race, Williamsfield, Manchester

Both amateur and professional athletes from across Jamaica take part in this race.

Air Jamaica Jazz/Blues Festival, James Bond Beach, Oracabessa

This event brings in both local and international talent. A must for music buffs!

Busta Cup Cricket Competition, Sabina Park, Kingston

This multi-day event is a regional competition among Caribbean countries.

Harmony Hall, Ocho Rios

This series takes place from January through March and features the works of Harmony Hall founder, Annabella Proudlock, as well as many other Jamaica artists.

LTM National Pantomime, Little Theater, Kingston

Jamaica’s rich pantomime theater is something not to be missed. It is scheduled Wednesday to Sunday, December through March.

Polo and Equestrian Club of Oakbrook, Shady Tree, St. Ann

The polo and equestrian event is considered one of the best in the Caribbean.
